The Low Down

Who: Riah Daswani

Profession: Social Media Manager, Nykaa

Instagram: @riahdaswani

Riah says, “Not many people know this about me but I have an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of Bristol in the UK. All my friends and flatmates were super into makeup and would do elaborate looks when we went out partying. To teach myself, I would spend my weekends watching the likes of Tanya Burr, MissGlamorazzi  (Ingrid Nilsen) and Zoella and I was hooked. I would often take weekend trips to London to stay with family and would spend hours in the Selfridges Beauty Hall which has ALL the top makeup and beauty brands.

I moved back to Mumbai after college because I realised I wasn’t as interested in Biochem anymore, and was more interested in communications, marketing and PR. I started to work at a PR firm as an intern for about 6 months, trying to build my CV. I knew Adwaita through a common friend and she found out how crazy I was about makeup she asked to meet me for a coffee. She told me a little bit about Nykaa which had been running for 6-8 months by then and was at a really exciting stage of growth, doing around 30 orders a day. She hired me right away!

My Skin Type: My skin behaves perfectly well most of the time. If I had to nit-pick, I would say it has the tendency to get a bit too dry and I do get the standard hormonal spot every month perfectly timed to my cycle.

For me, dealing with my extremely thirsty skin by layering up on hydration is key. Also, another thing I follow is that I try sleeping with extremely clean skin which has no traces of makeup – I believe you need your skin to breathe and repair through the night so I take my double cleansing routine extremely seriously and I’m not one to pile on heavy oils or heavy sleeping masks right before bed time.

Morning Routine

Though I have two cupboards dedicated to only beauty products, I like to keep my morning and night-time routines very simple so I actually look forward to and follow them every day.

In the morning after my workout, I’m normally running to work so I start by washing my face with a mild face wash such as the belif Problem Solution Cleansing Foam which is very gentle and refreshing and then apply 2-3 drops of the vitamin C serum that really helps to brighten the complexion (It’s Skin Power 10 Formula VC Effector) and a thin layer of my all-time favourite moisturiser, Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator and a thin layer of sunscreen – I’m currently using the Clinique SPF 50 UVA/UVB Mineral Sunscreen Fluid For Face. Using sunscreen if you have used Vitamin C during the day is a must. I always use sunscreen as my last step of my skincare routine and wait around 5 minutes for everything to absorb before moving on to my 5-step makeup routine comprising of tinted moisturiser, blush, brows, mascara and a tinted lip balm.

Night time Routine

In the PM, nothing relaxes me more than doing my skincare routine – it sounds very elaborate but it’s nothing more than an advanced CTM routine with a two cleansing steps and a serum thrown in.

I normally come home from a 12-hour shoot which means my face has had makeup on for a long period of time and it’s time to take it all off! My first step is my cleansing balm or oil which removes majority of the gunk without irritating my eyes and without tugging or pulling at my skin. I’m currently using K-beauty Banila co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm Original. For the second step or the ‘double’ part of the cleanse, I go in with the same belif Problem Solution Cleansing Foam face wash.

The Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2 – Dry Combination comes next as a toner and to remove the last traces of makeup and also any dead skin cells and really allow my skin to absorb all the products. My serum of choice for the past year or over has been the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum which really does wonders for my skin and I alternate this with a retinol based over the counter cream that was prescribed to me by my dermatologist (Yes, retinol because I’m soon going to be 30!). I then follow this up with a good moisturiser – either Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator again or the belif The True Cream Moisturizing Bomb and the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Supercharged Complex. I have also been trying out the ENN Blink Balm Eyelash, Lid & Brow Butter as it contains Vitamin E, Castor Oil, and Almond Oil which help strengthen and grow my brows and lashes. I’ve been following the routine for around six months now and I think it’s really working out for me!

Prepping for a big event

In the case that I need to prep my skin for an event, my aim is achieve an amazing glow. Now a glow is a combination of lifestyle, makeup and skincare, so it’s about loading up on lots of water, lots of veggies and exercise.

Exfoliating is another very important step to help prep your skin. If your skin is too dry and flaky, the makeup just won’t sit right. The physical exfoliants I love is the Forest Essentials Facial Ubtan Soundarya and I love mixing this with a little bit of yogurt and honey for some extra hydration.

For a chemical exfoliant, I am obsessed with the Alpha H Liquid Gold. I follow this up with really adding back some hydration and plump up my skin – a hydrating facemask like the Glamglow Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment or a sheetmask like The Face Shop The Solution Hydrating Face Mask.
