The Low Down
Who: Mrinalini Mohanty
Profession: Beauty blogger at Lipstick for Lunch

Mrinalini says, “I have been fascinated with makeup since I was a school-going kid. Back then, we were allowed to wear makeup only for school functions, and I would be secretly touching up my lipstick even after my performance was over. I would look forward to the summer vacations to wear the forbidden nail paints and had a bottle of Lakme Eyeliner that I practised drawing my wings with.
The interest in skincare arose a few years later when as a teenager I experienced some severe breakouts that left my skin with acne scars too. At this point of time, I was studying for my engineering entrance exams and did not have the time to take care of my skin, nor the access to the right information on how to do so. A drugstore face wash and a tube of benzoyl peroxide comprised my skincare stash.

When I finally got into IIT Guwahati, I had some time for skincare and also access to high-speed internet which allowed me to explore different skincare blogs and purchase products online. I experimented with a bunch of products and was finally able to clear up my skin.
From IIT to a corporate job, I tried a variety of skincare brands over the years and realized that I had a lot to say about each product that I used – information that was often not available in the reviews that I found online. This gave me the idea to write about my experience with all the skincare and makeup products that I have used, which gave birth to my blog Lipstick For Lunch (lipstick-for-lunch.com). My blog is almost three years old now and I am happy to have a lovely audience that trusts my reviews and recommendations.
My Skin Type: I have oily and acne-prone skin.
My mantra for skincare is to make sure that I don’t end up stripping my skin dry in an attempt to keep the acne and greasiness at bay. I try not to overwhelm my skin with too many new ingredients at the same time and also make sure to drink lots of water and to avoid oily food.
I notice that a lot of oily-skinned girls think that washing their face multiple times throughout the day and skipping on moisturizer is a good way to stay non-oily. I strongly disagree with this and wash and moisturize my face twice a day to keep my skin looking healthy and supple.
Morning Routine

In the mornings, I tend to keep my skincare routine fairly simple. I use a gentle cleanser to wash my face because I only need to get rid of the oil that my skin has secreted at night. I like the Simple Kind To Skin Refreshing Facial Wash or the Vilvah Honey Fix Face Cleanser because both these products leave my skin clean but not dry or stretchy. I then tone my face with the Vaunt Seaweed + Watermelon Face Mist which is refreshing and hydrating. I massage a few drops of the Suganda Antioxidant Serum on my face, which has helped a lot with evening out my skin tone.
Sunscreen is an absolute must for me during the day and I love the Tvakh Triple Protection Sunscreen because it contains SPF 30 and is hydrating enough to double up as a moisturizer for me. I also use an eye cream or serum twice a day and am currently using The Ordinary Caffeine Solution which hydrates the under-eye area and reduces puffiness.

On the days when my under eye area is particularly dry, I use the MamaEarth Under Eye Cream which is quite hydrating and is an affordable dupe for the Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment in my opinion. I then apply a generous amount of the Organic Harvest Lip Balm on my lips and I am good to go for the day.
Night time Routine

At night, I pay more attention to cleansing my skin thoroughly, and because I tend to use makeup on a regular basis, I am a strong proponent of double cleansing. I use the Simple Micellar Cleansing Water or the Bioderma SensiBio Micellar Water for my first cleanse, and if I am wearing very heavy makeup then I opt for the Banila Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm instead. I then wash my face with a foaming face wash, and I love The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Cleansing Foam because it gets rids of all the grime and leaves the skin matte but radiant.
As a night-time toner, I am currently loving the Cosrx 2-in-1 Poreless Power Liquid because it thoroughly cleans out the pores but I also love the Tvakh Vitamin C Exfoliating Water as a toner because it exfoliates and brightens the skin very effectively.

I then apply the Vaunt Tamanu + Cranberry Seed Face Oil which is a light-weight oil that hydrates my skin and brightens it too. I use the same eye serum as I use in the morning, and apply the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask which I love because it is not thick but hydrates my lips like a dream. And that’s it, I am ready to hit the sack.
Prepping for a big event

Before a big event, I try to understand what my skin needs at that particular point of time and incorporate treatments and masks in my skincare regimen accordingly. If I have any breakouts, I use the Juicy Chemistry Tea Tree, Charcoal & Bentonite Clay Mask that shrinks the acne and soothes my skin. If I have whiteheads and bumps on my face then I use The Ordinary AHA+BHA Peeling Solution that instantly gets rid of the bumps and leaves the skin super smooth. The Dr. Sheth’s Basic Brightening Daily Peel is also a good and slightly gentler alternative to The Ordinary Peel which helps to smoothen any texture on my face. If my skin is looking dull, I opt for the Vya Naturals Turmeric Brightening Scrub. I use these masks and treatments one day before the event and on the day of the event, I use a sheet mask right before applying my makeup. I swear by the DearPacker Sheet Masks which leave my skin plump and glowy. These products ensure that my skin is at its healthiest best for the event and that makeup glides on it evenly.

Also, since I am nearing my 30th birthday, I have started paying attention to anti-aging products. I currently use The Ordinary Retinol (0.5% in Squalene) as a night-time serum twice a week, and I can see that it is helping with reducing the fine lines and pigmentation.
