Creating a kid’s nursery, especially if it is for the first time, can be a sweet and fun way for new moms to celebrate this special time in their lives.
Mahwash Sheeki is an interior stylist who runs Sheek Designs and has given an amazing makeover to one such kid’s room. With such aesthetic, no doubt the nursery must have surely ended up becoming the favourite room of the house.
Keep reading on to discover why this particular nursery in Noida caught our eye and is now the little haven of our dreams! Over to Mahwash as she reveals her month’s long hustle & hardwork behind this makeover.

The Inspiration
The concept behind the design was to make a very small space feel open and less cluttered. We used a light pastel color scheme for kid’s space and avoided using dark furniture as it may make the space feel too heavy and crammed.
You can even recycle or get your dark furniture painted into a light color. It’s the most affordable way of revamping your space. Just use PU finish paint which is easy to wipe off clean. On the walls, you could use plastic paint to maintain and secure whites.
The question isn’t how big the scope of transformation is. The real question is how to make significant transformations by doing even the most simple changes.
The Challenge
Clients often have a fundamental problem of space and this one particularly had the same issue as well. It was a rectangular shaped room with two parallel walls taken up by windows and wardrobes & the third had a T.V. on it.
The biggest challenge of doing a kid’s space is to find smart storage solutions because kids have a lot of toys, books knick-knacks and their space immediately tends to get cluttered, especially when the space is tight.

How it was done
My design has elements which are clean and doesn’t make the space feel heavy. The T.V. panel had absolutely no use and it was only taking up a lot of space. We removed it and the space looked so much more open already. But we didn’t leave it at that.
To highlight the wall, we made this bespoke geometric pattern chest of drawers to add more storage. The colours and patterns were drawn from the overall vibe which was to keep the space feel totally playful and kid-friendly.
We also knew immediately by now that the bed wall has to now become the star of the show. We designed a bespoke daybed, just the size that would fit in this narrow space and we decided to go ahead with a nylon net canopy above the custom day bed to create that dreamy feel. The clients pre-owned some of these cushions and we mixed some new ones from First Cry.
Since it was a kid’s room, storage and maximizing the space was key. To keep the daybed completely secure, we added these custom crib-like panels on the front and sides which can easily be latched up when the kid is asleep so that she doesn’t fall, or it can be put down when there are more people who want to sit on the bed and to make the area more spaced out.
We added smart storage solutions by adding 3 pull-out storage drawers in the daybed as they’re more convenient than bed boxes. We also added a beautiful textured storage basket from The Nascent Décor.
The brief from the clients was to make the space feel cute and gender neutral. They didn’t want staple pink/blue color scheme to stereotype their kids space. So we created an animal themed space and brought in lots of fun, cute elements in the decor. This particular kid loved animals and we gave her tons of animal shaped accessories to play with!
We also wanted to play with the third dimension. Since we couldn’t do much on the two parallel walls, we went ahead with this super cute kid’s area rug by Little Looms. The flamingos tied in well with the canopy and cosied up the space for kids to play on.

A well designed kid’s room should not only be cute and comfy but also be able to stimulate the kid’s attention to detail and that’s one thing we lose as we grow older. Stay curious, because that’s the only way to learn.
“We are here to chill with you”! The amazing thing about being a child is that they fancy anything and everything around them like stickers on the wall (not just toys)!
You can make even the tiniest little space count. We used the space behind the door to create open shelving to display the kid’s toys, books, and also a good display for her collectibles.
Project Nursery: Tips to Tackle a Small Space
- Don’t just use the floor space for storage. The space is 3-dimensional. Make use of the vertical space.
- Add artificial lights in corners which are dark.
- Floating shelves are a great hack for tiny spaces where you can store stuff without using the floor area and without making the space feel crammed.
Most of our designs are bespoke as we wanted to make everything custom fit for the space which was honestly too narrow. However, we added specific decor items from Home Centre, used fabrics from DDecor and First Cry, and also found an interesting online store called the Peekaboo which had great collection as well.
Thus one should have a design/concept in mind before investing in items (so that it fits the space well). Try to find products that are versatile and have multiple usage (like storage plus seating). Parents who are doing up spaces for their kids should also keep in mind that the products should be kid friendly, safe, and shouldn’t have sharp edges.”
