Ever wondered how to mix prints, patterns, and colours in your home like a pro?

Shimona Bhansali, who is the principal designer at Design Hex, does exactly that and gives us a walking tour of Shubhika Davde’s lovely 3,000 square foot Mumbai home located on the highest plot of Malabar hill.

Details of where everything is from can be found under every picture. Over to Shimona now.

Shimona says, “This residence has been passed down from one generation to another making the inhabitants fond of the heritage and vintage essence of the space. The house originally displayed classic solid wood furniture maintaining the colonial charm.

While this striking colonial aesthetic residence has been in the family for generations, the space needed a slight upgrade to match the new inhabitants and their colourful personalities. Shubhika’s bold personality very prominently comes out in her work and her environment through her love for colours, prints and patterns.

ShubhikaShubhika Davda – Founder of the fashion label “Papa Don’t Preach” for young and rebellious women.

Meanwhile, her mother-in-law Hima Davda is passionate about nature, art, colours and symbolic elements in the house. Contrasting to Shubhika’s bold and lively personality is her husband who prefers a clean and white sci-fi aesthetic. The father-in-law Sunil Davda is more practical and utility oriented, where every element must be useful and required in the space, yet grandeur is essential for him.

It was very important for us to design a harmonious space that not only catered to the distinct tastes of the members of the house in a subtle way.

The carvings and mouldings on the furniture pieces and the space were constructed with wood, MDF or plaster of Paris. The old structure didn’t allow much flexibility to change into split AC’s so we decided to maintain the original window air conditioners as they also added to the vintage charm of the house.

Since the vast portion of the house was highlighted with textures and patterns in white. The bold colours and prints were brought in through the upholstery, furniture and art.

Here’s the House Tour!

The Entry Way: Fresh Mint Walls & Custom Mirror Frame

We enter the spacious and airy residence through a large wooden art deco patterned veneer door embellished with small brass pyramids inspired by Shubhika Davda’s label “Papa Don’t Preach”. The fresh mint walls perpendicular to the grained solid wood flooring and art deco cornice on the white ceiling marks the onset of the true aesthetic of the space.

Shubhika didn’t come across any good mirror frames for the space so while picking up artefacts for the house, Shubhika and I stumbled upon these broken rose stone sculptures that were ready to be discarded. We instantly fell in love and created our own mirror frame in raw stone and wood. Both of us are adventurous and if we set our mind to something we can create something unique and magical. We set it above the translucent tinted glass entrance console and painted it beige to blend with our aesthetic.

The Living Area: Geometric White Wallpapers & Mint Green Sofas

Walls: Classic vintage off-white wall coverings from Cole and Son.
Centre table: Fair square table from the Tetris collection by Design Hex.
Art: Lipai from Rajasthan
Furniture: Bench from Baaya Designs
Accessories: Ceramic stool from Mora Taara
Side table: Mason Homes

As you move into the Living Area, the walls of the space are maintained in white highlighted with printed white wallpapers. The wallpaper was inspired by Shubhika’s personality and her liking for art deco prints. She wanted the prints to be simple and geometric to maintain the elegance of the residence.

In the space, your eyes will naturally go to the stunning Lippai art work on the wall specially customised for the family. Lippai art is a traditional mud and mirror mural artwork from Kutch, Gujarat. The beautiful culmination of colours & prints is a very welcoming sight which is broken by statement and classic furniture like the large white art deco inspired TV unit and the grand pure white onyx centre table designed by us, while the crystal chandelier adorn the moulded ceilings complementing the vintage grandeur of the space. The brass detailing was continued throughout the space and maintained a luxurious style throughout the house.

The bold colours and prints were standing out through the cushions against an elegant mint green of the sofa. We bordered the ceiling with pop mouldings parallel to the solid wood flooring running in the space that was broken by the beige and white carpet as a base for our pure white onyx Tetris table. This was merely our canvas to start painting with the bold colours and prints that stood out through the cushions against an elegant mint green of the sofa.

The maximum culmination of prints is seen on the other side of the living room, which is the most active space in the house. The residents are avid readers and this space is used by the members for reading next to the large window that brings in natural light. The bright pink floral cushions looked quirky and playful against the backdrop of the black and white armchairs.

My favourite space and the picture perfect frame in the house is the cozy area with four armchairs that sits in front of the intricate Madhubani painting of Radha, Krishna and the gopis amidst a collage of colourful ceramic platters set above the beautiful mint side board by Design Hex.

The Dining Space: Classic Marble & Prussian Blue Art Deco

Moving on from the living room was the Dining Space divided by a solid wood brass painted screen with a simple geometric circle pattern. This screen segregated the two areas yet allowed visual communication into the other space.

We maintained the classic marble dining table of the family and quirked it up with Prussian blue art deco suede fabric upholstered on the brand new dining chairs by Design Hex.

The Balcony: Hand-Painted, Fresh Pink, Gujrati Element

balconyHand painted “tree of paradise” on the walls of the balcony to replicate the charm of swinging under the shade of the tree.

The Balcony is everyone’s favourite space in the house for a relaxing tea time. An artist was called to create a “tree of paradise” which took him 120 hours of artistic paint strokes to give us a beautiful corner in the balcony. This creates a peaceful ambience of swinging under the shade of the tree.

The swing is an important element in a Gujarati home. We maintained the swing and revamped it by adding carved wood in a combination of green base and a washed out pink colour. The cushions represented the fresh pink colour along with the neutral beige seat. The rest of the balcony was more neutral with warm wooden tones to cater to the tastes of the men.

The Long Corridor: Faux Wooden Ceiling & Glass Rose Chandeliers

A Long Corridor that leads you into the bedrooms is washed with natural light coming from the large wooden windows. We created a POP false ceiling and called an artist to create a green washed out wooden ceiling look so that it would complement our fairy-tale glass rose chandelier that brought in the magic and the flow of floral aesthetics in the space.

The Bedroom: White-Themed with a Dream Library & a Giraffe Head!

We were briefed by Shubhika and Ranvir that they wanted a clean, all white, large, airy and naturally lit Bedroom. We used sleek straight line black on white custom designed wallpaper in the space on which rested the structured white study table designed by Design Hex.

Shubhika’s room was maintained in all white through the black & white straight line wallpaper. We continued the white on the wardrobes and the study table to blend with the aesthetics. There wasn’t enough space for a library, so I decided to gift Shubhika her dream library by making a storage space above the wardrobes and giving her a custom brass ladder on castors on which she can swing upon and grab her favourite book for the day. This allowed us to keep the walls clean and neat just as Ranvir wanted them to be.

My favourite element was the black and white stripped Giraffe head as it allowed me to play with the scale and size of the same colour and pattern of the print, which created a very interesting visual impact.

We didn’t compromise on the location of the bed, size of the windows, position of the AC’s and storage space, which made it challenging to place the TV suitably in front of the bed.

This was overcome by suspending the TV on sleek brass rods that enhanced the artistic element in the space.

Through all the magic, florals, prints, pastels and mixing of personalities, this is a story that ends in a happily ever after in Shubhika’s fairytale and one more addition to the Design Hex stories.”

Prints & Patterns 101: How to get it Right!

Shimona continues, “There is no one way to do this but here are a few tips for beginners:

1) Don’t be afraid to be bold and adventurous.

2) Colour: Pick two colours and a neutral shade. So you have 3 main colours over all.

(Small hints of other shades within the prints are alright). The 3 mains will be uniformly seen all over the space in balanced proportions.

3) Establish a Neutral: It’s very important to establish a ‘neutral colour’ that can be the base of our canvas before we start the painting and printing. This colour should be spread around the entire space as the single binding shade which also will establish the tone of the entire space.

For example:

-It’s a ‘beige Or a White House ‘with lots of prints and art

-Or it’s a ‘stone grey’ base home with pops of prints and colours

-Or it’s a pastel home with a ‘pastel green hue’ throughout with patterns and prints breaking it in places. This is how we establish a neutral which plays a neutral role for the entire space.

4) Prints: Pick at least three different patterns. (the rule of 3 never fails )

Different Ways to pick patterns:

⁃ choose a theme or genre of design for example Art Deco and floral as we chose in Shubhika’s home. And get prints from the theme that compliment each other well.

⁃ Go all geometric: Kits of geometrics together work out an easy print mix.

Stripes are the best neutral in the works of mix and match of prints so when confused go for at least one stipe to balance out all prints.

⁃You may work the same print in two different colours or pick the same print in inverse colours, for example, black on white print can work against white on black of the same print.

⁃You may pick prints in only 2 colours but in varying sizes and proportions of the prints, for example, the study wall in Shubhika’s bedroom contrasts the black and white giraffe on the black and white wall covering.

⁃ Pick prints in similar hues.

⁃Important: Keep in mind to pick one print that has at least two colours from your 3 colour selection.

5) Sampling: Once you decide your colours and prints, you must make smaller samples of your colours and prints to test them against each other with like a little collage. Sampling helps you activate your creative side as you can think of combinations that can either be bold or subtle.

6) Repetition: The neutral colour must be paired with your prints to see if they complement each other. If the prints you are choosing against the neutral tone are in bold colours, you need to make sure that at least one bold colour is repeated in solids through the space. This can be done by adding the bold colour in furniture, artefacts, curtains, cushions etc. This will act as the binding agent for all the hold prints to your space.

7) Avoid: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Avoid adding all the prints in one part of the space .You should spread them across the room in even proportions.

Trial and error is the best way to know what you like and what works for you, so don’t be afraid to experiment!”
